Marni Von Wilpert Earns National Voting Rights Organization Endorsement

The Voter Protection Project announces support for San Diego City Councilwoman and former prosecutor Marni von Wilpert for California’s 48th Congressional District

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Voter Protection Project (VPP), the nation’s largest PAC dedicated to electing voting rights champions and fighting back against voter suppression, is endorsing Marni Von Wilpert for Congress in California’s newly redrawn 48th District—a critical pickup opportunity for Democrats to retake the House this cycle.

“Darrell Issa is an enemy of the fundamental right to vote. He openly tried to overturn the will of the voters in 2020 and is actively suing the California Secretary of State in an attempt to throw out ballots postmarked by Election Day,” said Heather Grevenworth, Executive Director of The Voter Protection Project. “We are proud to endorse Marni Von Wilpert because her lifetime of public service and steadfast defense of our democracy make her the clear choice to take on—and defeat—Darrell Issa this fall.”

“My commitment to protecting voting rights is rooted in my previous work as a civil rights attorney in the Deep South. At the Mississippi Center for Justice, I worked in communities where the Voting Rights Act served as a key protection. I saw firsthand how discrimination in housing, employment, and health care was intertwined with political disenfranchisement, and how quickly people’s rights could be stripped away when federal protections were weakened. I’m honored to have the support of the Voter Protection Project and look forward to working together to protect the foundation of our democracy.” Said San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert.

Last cycle, VPP supported more than 30 voting rights champions, including newly elected Senator Ruben Gallego (AZ), Senator Elissa Slotkin (MI), Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08), Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (OR-05), and Congressman Josh Riley (NY-19). Without a Democratic majority in Congress, Donald Trump and his MAGA extremists will continue their relentless assault on democracy, chipping away at our most fundamental rights. That’s why VPP is laser-focused on identifying and electing fearless leaders like Marni Von Wilpert, who will put Democrats back in control—ensuring every American’s sacred right to vote is protected, expanded, and never threatened.
